The Intentions are a 6-piece indie R&B dance and musical collective with an emphasis on world performance pieces representing various emotive states such as jubilance, insecurity, passion, fear, love. Laptops, samplers, organic dance, motown-influenced songwriting, with a hip hop edge. Having released his debut EP You Just Might in 2009, The Intentions are producer Andrew Chen's indie R&B troupe, and riding high on a wave of positive reviews, have recently headlined The Zoo, The Globe with a plan to tour the East Coast of Australia. Leader Andrew Chen brings with him a background in Asian music, hip hop sensibility, and tight arrangements guaranteed to keep the crowd at its feet!
The EP, ranging from the intensely confessional opener ‘You Just Might,’ the upbeat party-funk of ‘Come On Down,’ and the frisky puppy-like exuberance of crowd favorite 'Higher' openly showcases a still-developing artist with that constant urge to experiment and stretch beyond his teen years. Andrew independently wrote, engineered and mixed all the tracks, playing all the instruments and recording it DIY style in his bedroom on his laptop.
Andrew Chen grew up in Melbourne, and with two piano teachers as aunts, began tapping away on the ivories. After an abrupt locality shift to Singapore at 7, he began string lessons with a massively charismatic larger-than-life showman of a violinist. Andrew’s imagination began to wonder as his instructor captivated him with his flamboyant teachings, and having discovered hard rock and soul, turned his attentions towards guitars, basses, drum kits and faded vintage microphones. Ten years later, Andrew begins a music production degree at the Queensland Conservatorium, discovers the local scene, and is set on dedicating his life towards a career in indie music.
A variety of live setups including intimate acoustic shows (Queen St Mall, Barsoma) and packed full band shows (The Zoo, The Globe Theater, Ric's Bar). Andrew has also appeared at various festivals including the Caxton Street Festival, Mosaic Music Festival. He is now booking festival gigs for 2010 with his new band, The Intentions!
