Andrew Chen

 Music Director ~ Pianist ~ Vocalist ~ Composer

Andrew is a music director, pianist, vocalist, arranger, and composer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He first learned piano at the University of Michigan under the Piano Pedagogy Learning Program. He took lessons from Dr. Aya Hagelthorn, Leah Claiborne, Kelly Benson, and Claudio Espejo. Andrew transferred to the Faber Piano Institute, studying with Dr. Landon Baumgard and Dr. Veena Kulkarni-Rankin. 

He joined the Boychoir of Ann Arbor at the age of 9 and fell in love with choir. Andrew featured as a soprano soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's performance of The Snowman and with the Chorus America 2019 Conducting Symposium's performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah. He was an active member and leader in the tenor/bass section of the Boychoir until his graduation in 2025. 

Andrew was a member of the Skyline High School A Cappella Mixed Choir from 2022 to 2025 and Cantare TB Choir from 2021 to 2025. He also participated in Skyline Blues A Cappella, advancing with the group to the International Championship of High School A Cappella semifinals in 2023, 2024, and 2025. He arranged several songs for the group, including Life Is A Highway, Corners of the Earth (co-arranged), and Happy to Be Sad (co-arranged). 

Andrew most recently music directed Skyline High School Theatre's production of Hadestown: Teen Edition in May 2025, playing accordion and keys. He was honored with the National School Choral Award and the Tri-M Master Musician Award in June 2025. Andrew will music direct Young People's Theater's productions of Mean Girls Jr. and Madagascar KIDS in summer 2026. He will also attend the summer 2026 University of Michigan Choral Conducting Symposium, working with Drs. Eugene Rogers, Matthew Abernathy, and Julie Skadsem, conducting Francis Poulenc's Gloria.

Andrew currently attends Purdue University, majoring in Professional Flight and Music Theory and Composition while participating in the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. He received the Glee Clubber of the Month award for September 2025, the Ray Traylor Outstanding New Member Award, and the Drew Crum Outstanding Freshman Memorial Award for his work in the Glee Club. Andrew will assume the position of Assistant to the PurduSir of Performance Preparation in 2026-2027. He studies piano and music direction with Joseph Bandi, Purdue Musical Organizations.
